だけ

Usage

This expresses that a certain action will be attempted even though a positive outcome is not guaranteed. The part following だけ repeats the verb preceding it.

Examples

まだN2の勉強は全部終わっていないけれど、受験するだけ受験するつもりだ I haven’t finished studying for the N2 yet, but I intend to take the exam anyway.

店長にアルバイトを休ませてもらえるか聞くだけ聞いてみようと思う I’m thinking I’ll just ask the manager if I can take the day off — even if it doesn’t work, no harm in trying.
