かえって
Usage
かえって is used when an opposite result comes about, contrary to one's expectation. "On the contrary; rather"
Examples
頭が痛がったので薬を飲んだら、かえってひどくなってしまった。
My head was hurting, so I took some medicine, but it ironically made the pain worse.
急いでいたのでタクシーに乗ったら、道が混んでいて、かえって遅くなってしまった。
I was in a hurry, so I took a taxi, but ironically, due to the traffic, I ended up being even later.
